KTM presented its brand new Supermoto, the 690 SMC. The model is planned to arrive in the US at the end of March or beginning of April this year, but it already determined many Supermoto riders to go ahead and make a deposit for one even though they have never got a feel of it. That probably says a lot about their confidence that KTM rules when it comes to single-cylinder, four-stroke engines.

In this case, the fuel-injected 654cc motor is beloved for showing incredible numbers on the dyno (66 horsepower) and for the fact that it only weighs 305.4 lbs. Stop reading the numbers over and over again and try to imagine how this thing will perform on tight roads because street legality was a must while developing it. Not only it will leave behind all the supersports (only on the twisties) like most of these thumpers do, but you’ll be finishing your coffee before they even get to the point you’ve planned to meet.

Strongest competitor for the new born KTM is without a doubt the Husqvarna SM610E. It is striking similar to KTM’s new born and features a 576cc four-stroke, 4 valves, SOHC, Liquid Cooled Single which gets fed through an electronic fuel injection system. Husqvarna’s engine is weaker than KTM’s (54 horsepower), but still able to make a statement in the Supermoto class that both try to lead. Just check out the comparative results of the dyno.

You will also find the BMW G 650 Xmoto with 52 HP followed by Yamaha XT 660 X and Aprilia Pegaso 650 Factory, both putting down 48 HP, unimpressive when compared to the leader of the class. We all know who that is, don’t we?

IN THE BEST SUPERMOTO TRADITION
Razor-sharp Supermoto technology combined with the latest engine technology makes the 690 SMC a more than worthy successor to the winning 660 SMC, which can still be encountered on Supermoto tracks around the world. KTM is regarded as the inventor of the series Supermotos and it has dominated this spectacular category for the last decade. With the 690 SMC, KTM has set new standards for this especially sporty series segment.

DRIFT EVERY DAY
The basic concept of the 690 SMC is identical with the 690 Enduro, but was adapted for the demands on a Supermoto. As an addition to the new LC4 family, the 690 SMC clearly holds a sportier position than the 690 Supermoto, but is more suited to everyday riding than a 450 SMR and in particular possesses unlimited road homologation with all the power. Or to be precise: 62 perfectly controllable horses (45 kW) meet a 139-kilo featherweight.

CHASSIS

FRAME
A supremely innovative and super-sturdy tubular space frame. Developed using the latest analysis and simulation technologies, its construction of thin-walled chrome-molybdenum tubes guarantees maximum torsional rigidity for excellent tracking stability at a negligible weight (just over 8 kilos).

WEIGHT
The new 690 SMC is just as sporty as it is light. Ready to ride, the newest LC4-Supermoto weighs just 139 kg without fuel and thus has the basic prerequisite for its superior handling.

REAR FENDER
A revolutionary, self-supporting, one-piece fuel tank-rear fender unit, made of robust plastic with no additional metal braces. The optimum use of space combined with sporty ergonomics makes room for a 12-litre tank capacity. An integrated fuel pump is at the bottom and fuelling is accomplished through the lockable tank cap behind the seat. The installation of the supplied foot rests and handles easily readies the bike for pillion use.

CHASSIS
The fully adjustable, 48-mm USD forks from WP guarantee excellent damping, incomparable tracking stability and high reserves.
The WP shock absorber with an integrated compensation tank is attached by means of a Pro-Lever linkage system and has adjustable rebound damping and spring preload. The front and rear suspension travel is 275 mm.

SWINGARM
A one-piece, aluminium die-cast swingarm encloses the frame. Its contour was shaped to follow the bending moment curve to provide suspension-assisting flex properties in conjunction with the lowest possible weight. A Pro-Lever linkage gives the shock absorber a progressive pivot point and allows the rear damper to be placed in a low and steeply slanted position to make room for a maximum fuel tank capacity.

BRAKES
Brembo’s finest Supermoto racing technology guarantees maximum brake performance. Up front, a 320-mm floating disc is teamed with a radially bolted, four-piston fixed caliper and four single linings to ensure excellent application and high reserves. A single-piston caliper and a 240-mm brake disc reliably slow the rear wheel.

AIRBOX
Nestled within the tubular space frame, the large-volume airbox above the cylinder means high performance and, together with the long intake snorkel, efficient sound absorption.

EXHAUST SYSTEM
The narrow design of the frame permits a lateral and thereby direct arrangement of the powerful single header pipe, leading from the cylinder straight to the elaborately designed, stainless steel silencer. The large volume of the silencer ensures a minimal noise level, while the regulated catalytic converter oversees the effortless compliance with the EURO III emissions limits.

SEAT
The sporty and slim seat extends all the way to the steering head and, thanks to its elongated form, offers maximum freedom of movement. A cable noose seat release offers easy access to the airbox and electrics.

BODYWORK
The rear fender tank and all around new plastic parts give the 690 SMC a completely new, trend-setting appearance, which also clearly displays the clean lines of a KTM-Kiska design.
An add-on number plate bracket with indicators and licence plate illumination can be quickly and easily removed for racing use, so that the plate can be mounted directly below the robust LED taillight.

FRONT END
The flat headlight mask incorporates a weight-reduced headlight with an H4 bulb and a plastic panel with a scratchproof coating.

COCKPIT

The especially lightweight multifunctional instrument is equipped with an analogue tacho and a digital speedometer, as well as numerous additional functions to provide essential information while you ride.

ENGINE

The heart of the 690 SMC is its high-tech LC4 engine with 654 cc, which is currently serving as the role-model in the large-capacity, single-cylinder, four-stroke category. It distinguishes itself through state-of-art technology, low weight, compact construction and the highest performance.

OHC CYLINDER HEAD
An overhead camshaft operates the four valves (extra lightweight, hollow-shafted valves on the exhaust side) by means of two weight- and rigidity-optimized rocker arms. In combination with the compact combustion chamber, this construction makes incomparable performance and the greatest reliability possible, as well as makes servicing simple, due to the slanted attachment of the cylinder head cover.

CLUTCH

The APTC anti-hopping clutch efficiently prevents the rear wheel from chattering during braking. Under load, the system increases the pressure on the clutch linings, whereby the hardness of the clutch springs and consequently the hand grip strength needed to operate the hydraulic clutch were able to be significantly reduced in comparison with conventional systems.

ENGINE MANAGEMENT
The LC4 engine is supplied via an electronic injection system, which features a 46-mm throttle plate cross-section, automatic cold start, idle-speed regulator, lambda control and altitude compensation. The so-called EPT System (Electronic Power Throttle) produces a very homogenous power output, because the position of the throttle plate is electronically controlled in addition to the manual operation of the throttle.

BALANCER SHAFT

A central balancer shaft effectively reduces vibrations to a minimum.
